My October Baby

MyOctoberBaby-1asmall I think I’ve said it before, but October is my absolute favorite month of the year.  I love the sights, the sounds, the smells.  My dad’s birthday is in October; Steve’s dad’s birthday is in October; our anniversary is in October.  So, it’s probably no surprise that when Steve & I started talking about having children that I hoped that at least one of them would be born in October.  And, less than a month after we started trying to have a family, it looked like my wish would come true.  We found out I was pregnant and when we calculated the due date, it was October 30th.  A Halloween baby!  I was tickled!  But, that pregnancy ended in a very early miscarriage.  Less than 3 months later, we found out I was  pregnant with Gracie and she made her appearance in January.  And, it didn’t matter to me one iota when she was born.  I only cared that she was healthy and in my arms.

When Gracie turned two, Steve & I decided that we wanted her to have a sibling.  Once again, I got pregnant really quickly.  Just a note….don’t let anyone tell you that it’s really difficult to get pregnant after 35…I’m here to tell you that it ain’t necessarily so (quick, name the opera that song comes from ).  I was over the moon…I couldn’t wait to have another baby.  And, lo and behold, baby number 2 was due in….you guessed it….October!  Woo hoo!!!  We found out in May that that our October baby was going to be Abigail Mae and I could barely contain my excitement.  Another little girl and a birthday in October.  It just didn’t get better than that.  I was already planning October birthday parties…complete with pumpkin shaped cakes and Halloween themes.

Well, Abigail had different plans.  Instead of waiting to come in late October like she was supposed to, she decided to arrive, quickly and dramatically, on September 13th.  And once again, I didn’t care when her birthday was; all I cared about was that she safe and healthy.   (Personally, I think Abigail moved her birthday to September so she could share her birthday with her beloved Aunt Bronie )

As I watched her last weekend, celebrating her 4th birthday with her sister and her cousins, I realized that however much I may have wanted an October baby, I am beyond blessed by the January and September babies that I do have.  And, I’m reminded of the lyrics to the song….”You can’t always get what you want…but you just might find…you get what you need.”
