Friday Night Lights

So, I have a confession to make.  I’ve never really been one of those people who lives for the weekend.  Truthfully, for most of my employed life, I enjoyed my work.  And, once we had kids, the weekends tend to be even more hectic than the week days.  I do enjoy a day off just relaxing but that doesn’t happen too often.  And, even in my younger, wilder days, I wasn’t one to always go out on Friday nights.  So, I don’t ever remember really thinking, “Oh, I can wait for Friday afternoon!”  At least not until recently.

Our weeks seems to get busier and busier.  On Mondays, the girls & I have Girl Scouts.  On Tuesdays, Gracie has dance.  Wednesday night we all have church.  On Thursdays, Abigail has ballet.  Throw into that mix homework, cooking dinner, reading time, and a photo session for me here and there, and our weekday afternoons look like chaos on top of chaos.  But Friday afternoons are different.  We’ve started heading to the park right after school lets out and we stay.  And stay.  And stay.  Until the late afternoon (or early evening) sun starts to set and dusk starts to wrap its arms around us.  It is one of my very favorite times of the week.  We’re all getting fresh air. The girls visit friend after friend;  I get to see many of my friends.   We bring snacks, enough for us and to share.  And I start to feel the stresses of the week fall away.  As the day and the week wind down, I begin to forgive myself for all my failures of the past five days and just enjoy being a mommy, enjoy being with my girls, and bask in the love I feel all around me.  And that certainly makes Friday afternoons something to look forward to.  (That, and the fact that the late afternoon light at the park is magical for pictures!)
