Turkey Lurkey

TurkeyLurkey-1Small When I was a little girl, my mother was always one of the “room mothers” for my class.  She was always there for parties, bringing yummy homemade goodies for all the parties and at Christmas, the room mothers always got together and made a little craft for all the children in the class.  One year, we got little Lifesaver Candy men made with yarn and Styrofoam balls.  One year we got little felt hobby horses with candy canes.  I loved them…it always made me feel so special to get something with my name and the year on it.

Things are a little different now.  Room mothers, at least at our school, don’t really exist anymore.  Last year, when Gracie was in kindergarten, she still had parties for all the holidays and the parents brought in different things.  This year, at least so far, that hasn’t happened.  First grade is much more serious business apparently!  And, of course, you can’t bring homemade treats to school anymore.  Everything has to be store bought.  But, the idea of bringing in little treats for classmates is still alive and well.  At Halloween, both girls brought home several little treats from their friends.  I had several ideas to do for each of their classes, but Halloween kind of snuck up on me.  So, I decided to do treats for their friends for Thanksgiving instead.

I ordered these cute little felt turkey lollipop covers from Oriental Trading.  We put Tootsie Pops in them and then attached little labels that said “I am thankful you’re my friend.  Love, Gracie (or Abigail)”.  They turned out really, really cute and the girls were over the moon about taking a treat to class.    I just love to do things like this with them!  It’s one of my favorite parts of being a mommy these days!
